Pick a TikTok Topic People Already Search For

Most accounts do not have a content problem. They have a demand problem: they picked a topic nobody was searching for, then blamed the algorithm.

Demand Comes Before Effort
A video about a topic people already ask about will outperform a better video about a topic nobody looks for. That is uncomfortable, because it means the choice of subject matters more than the editing.
The good news is that demand is measurable before you film anything. TikTok tells you what people are looking for, in public, for free.
Read the Search Bar Like a Map
Type your topic into the search field and stop when the suggestion list appears. Those suggestions are real queries ranked by volume. They are the cheapest market research available.
- The base term shows the size of the topic
- The modifiers show intent: "for beginners", "at home", "cheap", "2026"
- Question forms โ "how to", "why does", "is it" โ signal explainer demand
Write down four suggestions that fit your subject. Those four phrases are now your next four videos, and each one already has an audience.
Mine the Comment Sections
Open the top three videos for a suggestion you found. Read the comments, sorted by relevance. People repeat the same questions under every video, and those repeats are what the search bar does not show: confusion, objections, and specific sub-cases.
"Does this work if I only have twenty minutes?" is a video. "What about students?" is another. Comment mining turns one popular topic into ten narrow ones, and narrow topics are easier to win.
Judge the Competition Honestly
A topic is worth entering when the existing videos are old, or long, or badly explained. It is not worth entering when ten accounts with a hundred times your size post about it weekly and do it well.
Look for the gap between demand and quality, not the gap between demand and your enthusiasm. Enthusiasm fades in week three; a gap in supply does not.

Check Whether the Topic Converts to Follows
Some topics get views and no followers: viral curiosities, one-off reactions, anything consumed and forgotten. Others get fewer views but convert, because the viewer expects more of the same and wants to be there for it.
The test is simple. Would somebody watching this video want a second one on the same subject tomorrow? If yes, the topic can carry an account. If the value is exhausted in one clip, it can carry a spike but not a following.
Write the One-Sentence Brief
Before filming, write the sentence the account stands for: "I test cheap kitchen tools under twenty pounds" or "I explain pension rules in plain English". If the sentence needs a comma and two clauses, the topic is still too broad.
That sentence becomes the bio, the playlist name, and the filter for every future idea. Ideas that do not fit it are a different account, and starting a second account is cheaper than confusing the first.
Validate With Three Videos
Publish three videos on the chosen topic before deciding anything. One video tells you nothing, three show a pattern: whether strangers arrive, whether they stay, and whether they follow.
If reach arrives but follows do not, the topic is fine and the profile needs work. If neither happens, the topic or the hook is wrong โ and it is worth testing a different suggestion from the same search list before abandoning the subject entirely.
What This Saves You
Choosing a topic with visible demand is the only part of growth that can be researched in advance. Editing, posting rhythm and profile design are all improvements to a decision already made. Get the decision right and the rest of the work has something to multiply.
