If you already typed your details into a follower generator, the useful question is no longer whether it worked. It is what to do in the next three days.

Hour One: Lock the Door
Change the password from a device you trust, and do not reuse the old one anywhere. If two-factor authentication is off, turn it on now โ that single change makes most follow-up attacks impossible.
Check the email address and phone number attached to the account. If either was changed, that is the most serious signal available, and it means somebody intends to keep access rather than just read it.
If you cannot get back in at all, use the platform's account recovery flow immediately and document each step with timestamps and screenshots. Recovery is slower when the attacker changed the recovery address first, and a written record is what support teams act on.
Day One: Audit Everything
- Connected apps โ remove anything you do not recognise, especially tools that can post on your behalf
- Active sessions โ log out of devices you cannot name
- Recent posts and messages โ look for anything you did not send
- Linked accounts โ check whether a page, ad account or business profile is attached
Ten minutes, and it tells you whether this is a harassment problem or a data problem. Both are fixable; only one is urgent.
While you are in there, change the password on any account that shared the same email and password combination. The generator did not need to steal your identity to make that list valuable.
Day Two: Read the Damage
Open the follower list and sample twenty profiles. Empty grids, default photos and thousands of follows with no posts are the signature of bulk accounts. Their presence explains a drop in reach better than any algorithm rumour.
Then look at your last five posts: views, saves and follows. If views held but follows fell, the profile is being judged by visitors whose expectations do not match. If both fell, the audience mix changed.

Week One: Rebuild Signals
The ratio recovers through content that earns saves and shares from real accounts. Publish three posts on your usual topic, reply to every comment, and do not delete anything โ old posts keep earning search traffic and deleting them removes evidence, not damage.
One practical note: resist the urge to "balance" the account with more purchased engagement. Each purchase resets the recovery clock, and the second one always looks more reasonable than the first.
What Recovery Realistically Looks Like
Two to four weeks before engagement rate stabilises, and longer if the purchase was large. Reach often returns before followers do, because reach is a per-post measure while the follower base is a permanent denominator.
Expect an uncomfortable middle: numbers that look flat while the underlying signals improve. That gap is normal, and it is the reason most people buy again at exactly the wrong moment.
What to Watch Instead of the Counter
Track four numbers weekly: reach from non-followers, saves, profile visits, and follows per thousand views. All four respond to content and none of them respond to purchases, which makes them the only honest scoreboard during recovery.
If those four move in the right direction for three consecutive weeks, the account is healthy regardless of what the headline number says.
The Point Worth Keeping
The generator did not damage the content. It damaged the audience data around it, and data heals at the speed of honest publishing. That is slower than a purchase and considerably faster than starting over with a new account.
Write down what happened, in one paragraph, and keep it. Not as punishment โ as a record of what the impulse cost, which is the thing that stops the next purchase at midnight.
